The school’s SpringBoard experience: School leaders say SpringBoard has been a major factor in raising student achievement in all demographic groups. Data from California’s Academic Performance Index (API) reports show Tetzlaff Middle School gained more than 60 points on its API score since SpringBoard was introduced.

About the district: Hillsborough County Public Schools in West-Central Florida is the eighth-largest school district in the nation. The district implemented SpringBoard Math and ELA in all its middle schools and high schools as part of an extensive college readiness initiative.

The district’s SpringBoard experience: Within three years of implementing the program, the district saw the number of AP® Exams taken by its students increase more than 100%, with a 57% increase in the number of scores of 3 or higher. During that same period, the percentage of students scoring at proficient levels on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in Reading and Mathematics increased at every grade level.

The district’s SpringBoard experience: According to school leaders, SpringBoard has helped improve test scores and prepare students for AP and honors courses. Since implementing SpringBoard, Mater Academy has seen the combined number of AP Exams and honors academic tests taken by its students double, as well as an increase in the college acceptance rate for its students.

The school’s SpringBoard experience: Before Baton Rouge implemented SpringBoard, enrollment in AP courses did not reflect the school’s diverse population. School leaders credit SpringBoard with changing that, and say the program gives students from traditionally underrepresented groups the foundation they need to succeed in AP and honors courses.

Quakertown High School earned a silver medal in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools Rankings, which is based on schools’ performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.

The SpringBoard Teacher of Distinction award is given to passionate educators whose work exemplifies the core principles of the SpringBoard program. These teachers have inspired a love for learning in their students and they have become distinguished leaders in their schools.

 

Currently teaching: Sixth-grade ELA; also serves as English department head 

Favorite SpringBoard unit: I have taught all middle school grades (6–8) of the SpringBoard curriculum, and my favorite unit is the novel study. I love exploring themes with students and encouraging deep thinking. I enjoy listening to their reactions and observations and the real-life connections that they make while reading the novel. The Embedded Assessments require them to make meaningful observations and support them with commentary, which is such a valuable skill. My students become thinkers instead of just readers.

Why Karen loves SpringBoard: I love using SpringBoard Digital! There are so many useful features in the digital textbook, such as the drop-down menu that lets me quickly see and assess student work. I can do quick checks of student understanding and then project student work to the class.

Karen's passion: How far I have come with the SpringBoard curriculum. I’ve gone from, “There’s no way I can teach all of this!” and “This is too hard for my students!” to “I’ve got this down now” and “Wow! Look at what they have accomplished!” I am confident using the curriculum now. That said, I am excited about the constant changes and improvements being made to the textbook and digital platform.

Currently Teaching: Sixth-grade ELA, reading, and social studies

Favorite SpringBoard unit: I love the Presenting Shakespeare unit.

Why Julie loves SpringBoard: I love the instructional design, the arts integration, and the collaborative learning integrated throughout activities.

Julie's passion: I am passionate about all students learning to appreciate, analyze, and craft language for an authentic and meaningful purpose.

Currently Teaching: Sixth-grade ELA

Favorite SpringBoard unit: It is very difficult to choose a favorite SpringBoard unit, but if I had to choose just one, it would be Unit 3 in sixth grade. I love when students discover argumentation because it is the cornerstone of the critical thinking skills they will apply to all areas of their lives. If I had to choose one favorite activity, it would be Activity 1.5 in Grade 8, Understanding the Hero's Journey Archetype. I love watching students discover the hero's journey archetype in contemporary literature, classical literature, and even as a pattern in historical tales of heroism.

Why Kimberlyn loves SpringBoard: One of my favorite things about SpringBoard is how students learn strategies for building skills and conceptual knowledge. It's great that I can teach students how to own their ideas and how to apply skills in various contexts. Students feel a sense of confidence as they develop a flexible mindset. SpringBoard provides all the best ingredients for student-centered instruction.

Kimberlyn’s passion: I am passionate about the principles that are the foundation of SpringBoard. SpringBoard helps me apply the latest research-based practices to my teaching. I am enthusiastic about connecting with teachers who are looking for ways to become more effective. My research interests include STEM concepts in the ELA classroom, and the connection between assessments and students developing flexible mindsets.

Currently Teaching: Sixth-grade ELA

Favorite SpringBoard unit: My favorite unit is Unit 2 in sixth grade. I really enjoy teaching the novel Walk Two Moons. My students really enjoy the story and the characters. Many of my students can relate to the story because they are being raised by single parents, and they understand how the character feels when she moves away from her home. I also like that there are different options for assessment.

Why Maria loves SpringBoard: I love SpringBoard Digital and its amazing resources, such as audio for the student texts. This feature helps my ELL and ESE (exceptional student education) students, as well as my auditory learners.

Maria's passion: I love the look on students' faces and the pride they feel when they finally understand a concept. I am so grateful that I can have a positive influence on today's youth, because they are the leaders of tomorrow. Teaching is my calling, and I am amazed that students return to visit me. Several of my former students have become English teachers. I feel honored when they explain that my class instilled a love of literature and learning. I am also passionate about the population of students who I teach. We are a Title 1 school where 93 percent of students are on free/reduced price lunch and 56% of students are ELL. They need caring, kind, and patient teachers who will shine a light on their lives.

Currently teaching: Sixth-grade advanced/gifted mathematics, SpringBoard Course 1

Favorite SpringBoard unit: It is quite difficult to select only one unit as my favorite but if I had to I would have to say it is Unit 2. My students really enjoy all the activities that we do in that unit as we explore integers. The two Embedded Assessments provide some really great topics for extension activities, such as exploring/discovering planet facts and creating a real scavenger hunt.

Why Larissa loves SpringBoard: I love that SpringBoard uses real-world applications and a scaffolded curriculum that allows students the opportunity to self-discover and deeply understand the math they are learning. Additionally, it makes it easy for students to see where the concepts they are learning now will be useful in the future, be it in their daily lives or higher levels of education.

SpringBoard is consistent and challenges students to think, explain, and reason in ways that many of them may not like at first, but learn to appreciate eventually. The fact that these features are in every subject/level allows us as a school to maximize our cross curricular and vertical impact.

Larissa's passion: My passion is allowing my students to make connections and find their hidden love for math. I love when in the middle of a lesson my students say, “Mrs. Perez, you just blew my mind. What’s next?” Comments like that are what make me love what I do and want to continue doing it. I want students to understand math at a different level and know that even though it may not be their favorite subject, they can still be good at it and find ways to connect to it.

Currently teaching: Advanced seventh- and eighth-grade ELA.

Favorite SpringBoard unit: My favorite SpringBoard unit is Unit 3 in the ninth-grade curriculum: Coming of Age in Changing Times. Not only do we get to read one of the all-time best American novels, but also students interact with American history, culture, and modern society in a meaningful and memorable way.

Why Amanda loves SpringBoard: I love that SpringBoard has learners interact with literature and communication skills in a way that is meaningful. Whether it is through research, presentations, or essays, students are working with content in a way that involves their interests and real-life skills. So often it is easy to become bogged down with the skills of what we want kids to be able to do that we forget to emphasize the life-lessons and inquiry for knowledge, but SpringBoard keeps those important learning objectives at the forefront.

Amanda's passion: I’m passionate about helping people become clear communicators and critical thinkers. Transforming a book into a text that comments on our current life or current society changes people’s mindsets, and I love facilitating the formation of independent thought and individual passion.

Currently teaching: Sixth-grade ELA, both regular education and bilingual (advanced) classes.

Favorite SpringBoard unit: I thoroughly enjoy teaching Unit 2 in SpringBoard, the novel unit in the sixth-grade textbook. I find that this unit jump-starts a real passion for reading in my students when exploring Walk Two Moons together through the SpringBoard lessons and student led-discussions. My classes also revel in exploring the life of Temple Grandin in the second half of the unit, relating to her love of animals and writing about it in an expository essay.

Why Alysa loves SpringBoard: I love the overall structure and layout of SpringBoard, mainly its backwards design. Beginning with the end in mind seems like a simple idea, but it is one that helps students take ownership of their own learning. Students begin to make meaning of each lesson and its purpose when continually referring to the scoring guide and their unpacking webs. It is so powerful that each day, students can leave class knowing exactly why we studied the concepts that we did and how/why they will use them in the future.

Alysa’s passion: My passion is striving to always facilitate a student-led classroom, one in which students are deeply engaged in the day’s lesson. SpringBoard has proven to help fuel this passion due to its student-led components, such as learning strategies and (daily) metacognitive marking of the text(s). Seeing the pride that students feel when mastering a concept during collaborative, student-led work is beyond rewarding.

Currently teaching: 11th-grade ELA

Favorite SpringBoard unit: My favorite unit would have to be Unit 4 of the junior year: The Pursuit of Happiness. Kids have this amazing experience with the concept of Transcendentalism and then get to explore their own journey. It is an incredible journey of self-discovery for them as they delve into their own lives through their personal essays. They can be a bit intimidated by it, but then they seize the reins and take off!

Why Rebecca loves SpringBoard: What I love most about Springboard is its backward design and its emphasis on process and strategies for learning. Students are given a genuine opportunity to move through their own metacognition in order to really understand how they learn and how they process that learning. I also love that it provides teachers the opportunity to collaboratenot just in their own schools and communities but in the larger community as well. That is super cool!!

Rebecca’s passion: My passion resides in watching my students engage in those “lightbulb” moments. School didn’t come easy for me, and I struggled, but I was determined to do well. I understand their challenges, and I just love helping my kids discover their own path to their own learning. I am not sure where else I could experience something that rewarding!

SpringBoard encourages students to take a more active role in their learning. And it creates an environment in which they can thrive. So students become more involved, more interested in what they’re being taught, and feel more ready for college-level work.
